FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Tiny Homes on Wheels

Waste & Sewage

Can I connect to sewage mains?

Most of our Tiny Houses are equipped with a standard flush toilet as part of the standard package. Customers are responsible for engaging a qualified plumber and obtaining necessary council permits to connect to sewage or a septic tank.

What other option do I have if I cannot or do not want to connect to sewage?

As a more eco-friendly and sustainable option, we offer installation and supply of waterless composting toilets, which do not necessitate an on-site plumber or any connections.

What are the benefits of a composting toilet?

Composting toilets conserve water and recycle waste into fertiliser, enriching the environment and potentially increasing food production through enhanced soil fertility.

How does a composting toilet work?

Our composting toilet is a urine-separating model that effectively separates urine and solid waste. It features a fan that ventilates moisture and odors, ensuring a completely odorless experience. Urine can be directed to an external collection or infiltration system, while solid waste is contained in a compostable bag made from corn starch, suitable for composting.

When opting for our composting toilet in your tiny home on wheels, it includes:
– Waterless separating composting toilet, 12 V / 230 V
– 2 waste containers with 1 lid
– Ventilation system
– User and installation manual
– Universal adapter for a power socket, Battery cables for solar / battery use
– Sample 10 compostable waste bags, a sample of Bio block and a sample of Abs

Do composting toilets smell?

Not at all! Modern composting toilets are highly sophisticated and efficient systems. They feature an electric fan that operates continuously, yet it runs quietly and economically. This fan helps dry solids and circulate air from inside the house through the system, expediting the natural composting process.

How to empty a composting toilet?

Firstly, we advise you to contact your local council to check for any restrictions or requirements regarding the use of composting toilet waste on your property. Each council may have slightly different regulations concerning waste disposal, so it is worthwhile to inquire about their wastewater management guidelines.

An essential aspect of using a composting toilet is the eventual disposal of the nutrient-rich compost. Here are some general guidelines and precautions:
 – Always wear a dust mask when handling toilet compost.
– Use latex, rubber, or protective gloves always.
– Thoroughly wash hands and clothing after emptying.
– Compost can be heavy, so seek assistance if necessary.
– If burying compost, ensure it is buried at least 10cm (about the length of the long edge of a credit card) deep.
– Alternatively, dispose of the waste in a designated dump site. The bio bag is designed to break down in a moist environment, making it safe to compost the waste in an external composting bin if your aim is to produce compost.
– Avoid using compost from composting toilets on food plants or vegetables (fruit and nut trees are acceptable).

How often will I need to change the composting toilet chamber?

According to the manufacturer’s instructions, the composting toilet chamber we use (Clivus Multrum CM LP – Standard Package) should be replaced every 6 months when occupied full-time by two adults.
